I like schemes that have somewhat muted colors, and keep window borders to a minimum. Very bright or very dark schemes tend to bring up contrasts that are hard on the eyes. I have a lot of windows on my pages, so I don't like their size to grow with a lot of fancy borders. Perhaps the very embodiment of what I don't like in a scheme can be summed up in Boilerplate or Satellite V or almost anything by Martha Royer.

Scherzo!
[ scheme included with Kaleidascope ]
Great. Does really interesting things with the borders and progress indicator without losing any visual information.

Very Clean. Takes care of everything. Buttons and sliders all look great. No confusion as to what anything is. Good desktop. Never lose the metaphor. Some buttons can look a little blurry. Sometimes on modal windows the title gets cut off on the end. Can't see higlight on Eudora mail messages. Finder windows have a light pattern to them. Standard windowshade noise. Special menu names. Special menu highlights. Opaque menus.

Cool transparent cursor. Thumbs stretch nicely. Clever menu backgrounds and item highlight (though the dark background mutes the text a bit). Good desktop. Scroll bar arrows a bit far apart when doubled. Bad radio buttons (not clear when un/selected). On some small menu lists (FileMaker) can't see which item is highlighted.

I'm surprised I liked this one, but it grew on me. Nice, clean design. Can't see DragThing active application highlight. Special menu names. Special menu highlight. Standard windowshade noises. Single color desktop. |

Interesting WindowShade sound effects. Cool brushed steel backgrounds. Checkboxes are bad. Zoom and WindowShade icons indistinguishable. Can't see message highlights in Eudora. Standard menu names. Special menu highlights. Special windowshade noise. |

Not much different than iMaculately, but a much more popular download from the Kaleidoscope site. I happen to like the folders of iMaculately better.

Circle Vision

Very nice. Can be a little busy. A window with no title has a visual artifact where the title would be. Windowshade noise (coin bag dropping). In Eudora, the text under the toolbar buttons is almost the same color as the background and very difficult to read.

Special menu names. Standard menu highlight. Windowshade noises (underwater click or 'cl-tok'). Good desktop. Cool buttons (different default button indicator). Highlighted item in Dialog Box can't be seen. Just a bit puffy on the window edges. Finder window backgrounds are a very subtly textured white.

Nice, clean replacement for Apple Platinum. Not too many changes. Has nice windowshade sounds (e-yew & woop). Menu highlights are subtly different. Can't see OS 8 list box selections. Can't see some list box selections in FileMaker Pro. No active app highlights in DragThing. Standard menu items. Special menu selection. Special windowshade sound.

Nice, subtle gradations on everything. Good, subtle desktop background. Standard windowshade noise. Special menu highlights. Special menu names. Grafito is best viewed at over million colors (16700000 colors). If you have to view at 32000 colors, try the Grafito 32000 scheme.

Borrowing from Kei Kinoshita's Grafito theme, but more rounded with an iMac-ish white ribbed theme. Very usable. Solid desktop background. Standard windowshade noise. Transparent menus. Special menu highlights. Special menu names.

Nice, subtle iMacish gradations on everything. Desktop background is the same as the window background which makes window seem to fade and disappear--the effect Kei made this scheme for. Like all of Kei's schemes, very clean and usable. Does this have slightly transparent menus like Mac OS X, or is this because I'm now using Mac OS 9.1? Annoyance: Can't see higlighted messages in Eudora Mailboxes. Standard windowshade noise. Special menu highlights. Special menu names.

Very light scheme. Like the brushed metal look. Horizontally ribbed desktop pattern. Nice, clean desktop picture as well. Hard to see highlighted messages in Eudroa. I like most anything by Kei Kinoshita. Window names left-justified. Standard windowshade noise. Standard menu names. Special menu highlights.

Substitute for Apple Platinum. Window backgrounds are a bit dark which makes it hard to read document names. Special menu highlights. Special menu names. Windowshade sounds (typewriter click). Close, Zoom, and Collapse boxes are identical. Can't see list box selections (no highlight) in FileMaker Pro. |

Another one that just grew on me. Simple and clean and very usable. The radio buttons do fool me a bit. Nothing really special, though it does have the window title left justified (which I like). Standard menu names. Standard menu highlight. Standard windowshade noises. Single color desktop. Special progress indicator.

Somewhat split on this one. I like the interface, but dislike all the buttons on the left side of the title bar (Mac OS X-like). At least they are labeled. Horrible cursor. Good interaction with DragThing (good active application hilights). Nice menu background. Would be a good desktop background. No desktop background. Standard windowshade noise. Standard menu names. Special menu highlights.

Flat Five. Menus are slightly transparent and throw shadows. Cool effect taking from Mac OS X. First Kaleidoscope scheme to mimic it. Title bar buttons are indistinguishable from each other (can mix up the resize with the windowshade). Boring ribbed desktop background. Some windows open with the title bar hidden by the menu bar. Standard windowshade noise. Special menu names. Special menu highlights. |
